Where Smart People Shop!

A good friend sent this to me tonight...

"I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection."

Just thought this was worth sharing! Personally, I think it's a GREAT idea!!!

This is a great idea. Wish I had known about it when my boys and I lived in an apartment where we couldn't have a dog!
Along this same line - I once heard that if you are not an accurate shot, but want a gun for protection, a shot gun is your best choice because the "click click" of getting it ready may be enough to scare someone off, plus since the shells spray out shot on impact you have a better chance of at least hitting your intended target. Of course, it comes with it's own safety concerns.

My choice is a Rottweiler that is afraid of it's own shadow lol!

Hiya beach cat's bargains. Great comment!

Yep without stating the obvious when someone is breaking into your home, you're going to use any means for self defense. I stated the respiratory effect because, small children or pets may come in contact with the wasp spray by accident. That would be a definate bummer!

I have a few randy boys in my family that would have a field day with a can of wasp spray. Such an item needs to be put away "out of site out of mind". Kids just love to spray aerosol cans and such. It's common for a kid to eyeball a spray can, wondering what it would be like to press that little button atop the can.

It's leathal if a child or someone with respiratory problems comes in contact with it. I just wanted to point out the difference between pepper spray and wasp spray.

Oleoresin Capsicum ie OC or Pepper Spray is used by law enforcement because, it's not fatal and causes no respiratory problem in the general public. It's what's considered a "less than lethal weapon." Wasp spray has the same contact effect but, comes with the serious respiratory issue.

You're right about, "trying do do your best to STOP the intruder at ANY cost.." Wasp spray is just another option for those who can't carry a concealed weapon or obtain one for home use. I'm an Irish citizen and I can't obtain a concealed weapon here. I have a lovely little cannister of OC on my keychain as well as a little sharp key that I keep between my index and forefinger while walking to my car.

Many girls here place a key that has been sharpened on their key ring and place it between their index and middle finger for protection. When I first moved here, I didn't understand why I saw so many woman carrying their car key in that manner. It's just a little means of self defense. Law enforcement here in southern California are very helpful if a group of people want to learn self defense.

Thanks for your comments EmmaDear...quoting you:

"The negative aspect that I did find is that wasp spray does effect respiratory unlike pepper spray. Wasp spray may induce death in people unlike pepper spray. Like in anything, a person must way the pros and cons when using anything for self defense."

If someone breaks into my house, my gun will be what I look for first. However, if for some reason the wasp spray is in easy reach I certainly wouldn't care one bit if I caused respiratory problems or death. Call me crazy...but when it comes to self-defense and/or the protection of my family I would do my best to STOP the intruder at ANY cost (hopefully to them!!!). I HOPE and PRAY none of us will ever need wasp spray for anything other than to kill a wasp!

Who would have thought...WASP Spray!!!

Good tip beachcat's bargains! Go to this particular link and see the video regarding wasp spray: http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/video?id=6650351

I had received a similar email last year and I had researched the reality of it on Snopes.com and Google. I had found this particular story on abc 13 news out of Toledo, OH regarding a woman who was a traggic victim of a home invasion. The Toledo police had recommended wasp spray for home defence.

It's a good tip that I believe to be true. I didn't find any laws or local codes saying that Wasp spray is illegal either or needing a permit. It may be a "legal" option for girls who travel alone at night.

The negative aspect that I did find is that wasp spray does effect respiratory unlike pepper spray. Wasp spray may induce death in people unlike pepper spray. Like in anything, a person must way the pros and cons when using anything for self defense.

Listed are some other references regarding using wasp spray for self defense. That way you can judge for yourself. At least view the abc news bit out of Toldedo, OH.

Thanks.
