Selling Online: Picture Taking Basics

Everyone has seen really bad photos on online at auction sites or online stores.

How many times have you drove by a tag sale not wanting to stop because, you see heaps of clothes or items thrown on a table? How many times were you shopping online and passed up an item because, the product photo was either distorted or the product was sitting on a desk full of unattractive items?

Well, the same concept applies to online shops. People will pass up our stores if we post poor quality photographs of our product.

*Here's an article that I thought was worth while regarding taking easy, inexpensive photos that will help sell your product.

It's true, a photo can either break or make a sale.

I hope you take the time to read this article about taking basic pictures to promote your items no matter where you're selling them.

You hit the nail right on the head ScentsYourAreHere. I've learned that we don't need expensive gear but, just use the basics rules of picture taking.

PS Your cucumber melon soap makes me hungry! :O)

Thank you Emma for posting this. Some great info. I always seem to have trouble in getting the pictures just right and have a couple of items that look really bad but really aren't :)

This also saves me from buying a new camera because I thought that was the problem. Well, guess we never want to think its "ME" instead. But in this case I have to say it IS me.......

You're most welcome LeatherNiche. I sought out help through Barbar Crews again because, I had noticed some really bad photos that I had posted online. I obviously was ok with the pics when posting them at the time.

Every now and again I'll go through and span my product pictures and boy... I've had a few doozies!

I have some gizmos that I use to take photos (portable photo labs and such) but, I prefer to take photos of the actual product laying about. I had one pic of a candle set and I could see the rim of my coffe cup in the corner...but get this... the rim of my cup had lipstick on it...Oh boy!

Why I hadn't seen that in the original post is beyond me. I guess our mind only sees what it wants to see at times. Well, mine does anyway. :O)

Yep, there's a lot of good information that's offered freely from professionals on the web. The tough part is sorting through all the knowledge. -Garbage in..garbage out.

I've always subscribed to Barbara Crews at About.com because, I find many relevant topics. She was once a novice as well who learned by trial and error.

I'm glad that you found this information regarding picture basics helpful. I too look to other ecrater sellers for guidance.

By the by LeatherLiche, I view your photo every now and again of your Japanese Maple Branch "Sermon On The Mount Japanese Maple Carving." It's a fascinating photo.

The aspirin truly does look like a moon! I think it's the universe is sending inspiration through your product photo and I'm glad that you had posted that particular photo. It makes you think, doesn't it? OoohWeeeeOoooh!

Emma Dear,

Thank you for the information and I have visited the site and one of the points made was about cropping images. I have that ability, know how to use it, but have let it slip off to the side, so to speak. Now, I will refresh my thinking about cropping images and review other aspects of good photography listed on the site. Oh, I did subscribe and have already received the confirmation and a newsletter. You have done your part, now its up to me.

Thanks again

I have gotten help from other experts on about.com's ask an expert section. Now I need to get over there and subscribe to that newsletter too, thanks for that tip.

Happy Saturday MidcenturyMarilyn. Yep. Barbara Crews knows her stuff. She's helped me with listing cookie jars (biscuit jars).

I subscibe to her newsletter because, of her content regarding collectibles. I had an object that I had no idea what it was. I thought it to be a small bud vase but it turned out to be a medicinal cup that you fill with a solution to place over your eye.

How funny it would have been to list as a bud vase, aye?

Thanks for the comment.

Wishing you a good day!
