I include shipping/handling cost in the asking price for each item. We all know of sites that suggest "free shipping" as a motivator to buyers--well, I think we all know that shipping must be paid for by someone and I (cynic that I may be) assume that the cost is included in the listed price. What I want to convey to purchasers is that when multiple purchases are made within a few days, I combine shipping costs. What this means is that if 10 pieces of jewelry can fit into a small fixed rate Priority Mail box, that is what the purchaser pays for - for this example, I round off the cost of the box to $5.00 because I don't like fussing with odd numbers. The shipping cost of one piece of jewelry is going to be $2.50 because of the need for me to provide the padded mailing envelope. So, when more than one piece is purchased, I deduct $2.50 from each item after the first 2.
For items such as a glass bowl, I determine the cost and method of shipping before listing and then include it in the total price with an explanation of how the item will be sent; e.g., "Will be sent in medium size fixed rate Priority Mail box."
