Blue or black velvet is the best for jewelry that I have found. But I do pictures on a multitude of different backgrounds. But if you really want it to shine brightly to catch the eye faster, use darker colors and watch the flash as you want it to shine and not have the glare.

Thank you for the kind words Meryl...I don't know that anyone could learn from me but I do enjoy the photography for the most part. Jewelry can be particularly tricky sometimes.

I like black as a background. No clutter is a necessity (flowers, coins, etc.). So long as the pics are large (as they are when you view each individual one), black is perfect! Beachcat, you've been at this photography/selling thing for a long time...we need to learn from you! Congrats!!

I used to be in the black background thought and some things still look nice on black, however, I switched to mostly lighter backgrounds and like it - but maybe I just needed a change! I really like a mid-tone gray and my camera seems to like it too.
Just my thoughts!

Black is good for diamonds and pearls and clear rhinestones but not so hot for colored stones or non sparkly stuff. Also avoid shiny black like silk or satin. It causes too much reflection and can fight your flash. I use white more than anything and occasionally pull out a bright red dinner napkin.

yes black is the best background because it draws their eyes to your stuff and not whats behind or next to your stuff. You want your stuff to stand out ? use black. I had a huge jump in sales last month on ecrater soon as google put the shopping link back visible on their search window. We can only hope business keeps at a steady pace up! lol
GOOD LUCK EVERYOE!

Much better on the pics! I heard on a morning news program last week or so that a black background is what we as sellers should use. I'm not convinced of that, but who knows? Looks great....
